Approaching microtubule structure with the scanning tunneling microscope (STM).

We demonstrate that the scanning tunneling microscope can be used to obtain information about arrangement of tubulin subunits in the microtubule wall. Long rows of subunits with a periodicity of 3.8 +/- 0.4 nm were clearly visible in the images of microtubules. The separation between the rows of subunits was 4.8 +/- 0.4 nm. Close inspection of two images revealed another periodicity of 7.8 +/- ...

Tunneling spectroscopy on carbon nanotubes using STM

Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) prepared on the graphite substrate were investigated by a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope at 77K. From the tunneling spectra with high-energy resolution obtained at 77K, both metallic and semiconducting SWNTs were found in the same bundle. For the metallic SWNT, the conductance curve inside the first peak is finite and quite flat. The width bet...

Scanning tunneling microscopy studies of topological insulators.

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), with surface sensitivity, is an ideal tool to probe the intriguing properties of the surface state of topological insulators (TIs) and topological crystalline insulators (TCIs). We summarize the recent progress on those topological phases revealed by STM studies. STM observations have directly confirmed the existence of the topological surface states and cle...

Design of an electronic system for acquisition of the tunneling current signal of a Scanning Tunneling Microscope STM

An electronic system was designed to acquire tunneling current of a Scanning Tunneling Microscope. A tunneling current originates from the interaction between a conductive tip and a conductive or semiconductor sample. Lower currents than 100 nA were generated and from them, voltages were obtained in the order of 1 volt. Using this mechanism, it is possible to construct images of the atoms posit...
